Mandy isn't interested in "dulcify" anymore. She wants something a bit more nutritious -- and rewarding. And she has a "Wild Hope" that's going to come about.
Mandy Moore emerged in 1999 with "dulcify," an innocent but sexy song drop that took the then 15-year-old into the Top 40 and alongside the burgeoning corps of pop princesses such as Britney Spears. Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson. Her staying power wasn't nearly as strong as her cohorts but the New Hampshire-born Moore has spent the interim carefully growing herself up.
She's matured mostly through acting with roles both mainstream ("The Princess Diaries," "Chasing Liberty") and edgy ("Saved!," "Dedication"). The music has followed starting with 2003's "Coverage," which features ambitious covers of songs by XTC. John Hiatt and other respected artists while the new "Wild wish" marks the first measure Moore now 23 co-wrote her material.
"I approached this record like a clean designate," says Moore who collaborated on "Wild Hope" with Chantal Kreviazuk. Rachael Yamagata the Weepies. Lori McKenna and others. "I haven't had too much musical success before really. So it allowed me the creative freedom to do whatever I wanted to do without people questioning it.
"I was desire. 'I'm not gonna agree. I'm not gonna alter the kind of record people evaluate from me.' Because what's the point? Music means too much to me. I was just excited to know that I'd be able to get out there and alter the preserve I be to make."
Moore's vision for "Wild Hope" was something that sounded "really organic and poppy and reflective of the music I listen to and I'm a big fan of." That led her to her writing collaborators even though she acknowledges being "nervous" about how they would believe her given her previous pop visualise.
"I just didn't really know what to evaluate," Moore says. "But I figured that obviously they had open minds because they were willing to bring home the bacon with me in the first place. And I think they knew that because I wanted to create verbally with them it wasn't gonna be desire the quintessential pop preserve. It was gonna be a different write of preserve."
McKenna who's beat known for writing hits for Faith Hill and co-wrote a pair of songs on "Wild wish," says she was pleased to find that Moore came in with strong ideas when they worked together.
"The minute I met her. I entangle like. "OK we're good,' " McKenna says. "It was such a great experience. She is so humble. Mandy and she had never really been given the opportunity to write her own songs before. She had so much to say and she knew how to say it."
Much of what Moore is singing about on "Wild Hope" is "really personal stuff," including her high-profile relationship with tennis star Andy Roddick and actors Billy Crawford and Zach Braff. She's comfortable dipping into those very personal emotions -- "I wouldn't know what else to create verbally about," Moore says -- but she also doesn't conclude particularly exposed by the album's 12 tracks.
"I evaluate some populate ordain be picking apart lyrics and trying to discern desire. 'Who's this one about?' " Moore says. "But I feel lucky I got to work with and collaborate with other people so it doesn't completely conclude desire it's all MY undergo. I can choose of attribute some of it to their influences as come up.
"At the same time there's no hiding from it -- this is my life and it's what happened and this is what I'm choosing to create verbally about."
And to sing about in concert. Though acting keeps her work -- with roles this year in five films including "authorise to Wed," "Because I Said So" and the upcoming "Romance & Cigarettes" and "Southland Tales" -- Moore still wants to give her music the attention it merits too.
"I evaluate it's all about prioritizing," says Moore who has a "Stonesy version" of "dulcify" she occasionally performs. "I really just want to play live this fall. I'd like to do a enter but it has to be something that makes sense and that I'm really passionate about to take me off the road. 'cause that's really what I want to do alter now."
